Should ultra runners do interval training?
We asked Coach Karel, and this is his experience:
“I used to think that if I was going to run my races/FKTs around 7min/km (or 11min/mile) I should train at 7min/km as well. But there’s so much more to training than just running at the intensity you’re running on race day.
So, from training only volume I changed to more structured training. It helped me make the most of my limited training time and break through the fitness ceiling I was reaching (by only doing LSD).
Structured interval training is necessary to raise the ceiling and to become stronger year after year. Training volume will only get you so far.”
So, whatever level you’re at, you’ll benefit from incorporating different intensities in your training.
