VO2Max is the maximal oxygen consumption rate and generally expressed in ml/kg/min.
As oxygen is needed to burn energy substrates (fat and carbohydrates), VO2Max is a primary performance indicator and predictor in endurance sports.
Genes will determine an individual's maximum potential VO2Max, and also gender and age and some other factors beyond a person's control will influence it.
However - with smart and consistent training one can optimize his/her VO2Max.
In order to do so training will need to have some variation in order to trigger and generate the appropriate adaptations both on cardiopulmonary and neuromuscular level.
Generally, this means combining long slow runs with high intensity interval training sessions in a well structured seasonal plan.
